Before, it was only possible to see a hygienist after being referred by a dentist. As gum health is so crucial to your overall dental care, you can now visit a hygienist without being referred.
If you’ve noticed that your gums are bleeding when you brush, it’s best to act fast and see a hygienist. Not all symptoms of gum disease are noticeable but a hygienist will be able to diagnose and treat it. Leaving gum disease untreated can lead it to progress to periodontitis, which isn’t curable.
Gum disease has also been linked to other conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and strokes.
What do walk-in hygiene appointments involve?
A walk-in hygiene appointment involves most of what is included in any other visit to the hygienist. The chief part of the appointment is a scale and polish, which is a deep clean that removes any plaque and tartar build-ups. The hygienist will also carry out an assessment to track and assess the severity of gum disease. If you have a more serious condition, they will suggest your next steps which may involve a six month periodontal treatment plan.
Once your teeth are thoroughly clean, the hygienist will give any advice on how to better keep your mouth gum disease free at home.
